Learning to Help Others
Helping others is one of the greatest efforts one can make. One fourth grade class at Kings Glen impressed their teachers with a strong show of eagerness to help homeless and hungry individuals.
Students participated in a project based learning experience to plan and prepare lunch for the homeless at a local hypothermia shelter.
It was a complex problem they were required to solve. Students needed to learn what items were healthy first. Then they figured out how many items and ingredients were needed to create the healthy choices. Calculating quantities and comparing prices for food was next. After learning some facts and how-to's, students then designed and set up an assembly line to make 25 sandwiches. They were able to put a plan into practice with success.
The teacher will be delivering these made-with-love sandwiches to the hypothermia shelter, today.
This authentic and very meaningful experience also allowed these students to demonstrate their interest and understanding of helping others.
