A Message from Principal Ritter

Greetings Gator Families,

Over the past two weeks we have had the opportunity to review our Student Rights and Responsibilities (SR&R) concluding with grade level chats on Monday.  As we shared with the students, our collective goal and responsibly is to nurture a positive and supportive environment.

While playfulness is a natural part of childhood, it's crucial to understand that this can sometimes lead to hurt feelings or even physical harm. What might seem like fun to one child could be upsetting to another.  We have also been discussing the importance to think before we speak - words have power! We encouraged everyone to consider how their words might affect others and to choose their words wisely; to treat each other with kindness and empathy. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference in someone's day.

Thank you for your continued partnership in fostering a positive and supportive learning environment for all our Kings Glen Gators!

A Message from Principal Ritter

Greetings Gator Families,

We have seen many examples of friendship in our Kings Glen GATOR Attributes.  These are essential building blocks for a positive school environment and for raising compassionate, well-rounded individuals. We are always exploring these attributes throughout the school day in various activities and discussions, and we know that the conversations you have at home are just as crucial. Here are some questions that may spark some conversation with your child:

  • "What are some things you look for in a good friend?"
  • "Tell me about someone you consider a good friend and why."
  • "What are some ways you try to be a good friend to others?"
  • "If someone new joined your class, what would you do to make them feel welcome?"
  • "Have you noticed anyone at school who might need a friend? What could you do?"
  • "Sometimes it's hard to make friends. Have you ever felt that way? What did you do?  What can you do in the future?"

SEL Screener Learn More About How Your Child Feels at School

The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener will be administered to students in grades 3-12 in March. Students use the SEL Screener twice a year to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop the skills they need to succeed. The screener works by asking questions or presenting statements that students can think about and respond to. This gives students a way to share how well their school community makes them feel valued, included, and supported.

After each screening, results are available in the Documents tab of SIS ParentVUE(link is external) and mailed to families who do not have a ParentVUE account. For more information, including SEL Screener questions and opt-out information, please visit the Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener(link is external) webpage.

Resources for Families

Fairfax County Public Schools believes that public education is the cornerstone of a successful community. We will continue to do all that we can to ensure access to safe and vibrant learning spaces for all of our students, families, and staff. While some things may be changing, what’s unwavering is our commitment to ensuring that all students benefit from a world-class education in a safe, welcoming, and inclusive learning environment. We encourage our students to come to school every day.

Parents/caregivers, students, and staff have asked what FCPS is doing to ensure a safe learning experience for our community.  Please see resources below.

FCPS continues to monitor national policy decisions that impact our students, their families and some of our staff and their families. There are existing laws that govern our work as a public school system.

In accordance with federal law, FCPS does not require any student or family member to share their immigration status. Also, FCPS does not collect student or family member immigration status. For more information about FCPS resources, click here(link is external).

Information about Eating Disorders

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023), Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives. There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources to be provided to parents and guardians of Fairfax County Public Schools. This information may be found at Eating Disorders(link is external)

A Message from Principal Ritter

Greetings Gator Families,

Congratulations to Dr. Michelle Keenan!  The Region 4 Leadership Team came to Kings Glen on Thursday afternoon to announce Dr. Keenan as the Region 4 Outstanding Elementary Teacher.

Dr. Keenan’s vision for collaboration extends across pyramids and schools.   Her teaching philosophy is rooted in a profound belief in the potential of every student. She dedicates extra time and effort to ensure that all her students, regardless of skill level, have the support they need to thrive. Her before-school programs, lunch practices, and end-of-day sessions have become lifelines for students seeking additional instruction or encouragement.  Dr. Keenan’s impact is immeasurable, yet she remains steadfastly out of the spotlight, always pushing others to shine. Her humility, paired with her relentless drive to uplift others, is what makes her so deserving of this honor. She is a leader, a collaborator, and a true champion of her students and colleagues.  Please join me in congratulating Dr. Keenan!!!!

A Message from Principal Ritter

Greetings Gator Families,

Well, the groundhog has predicted six more weeks of winter, and the forecast seems to agree!

On Monday, the students at Kings Glen had the opportunity to spend a day engaged with literacy!  In addition to receiving a free book from the PTA, the PTA also provided the funding for us to bring in author Marc Tyler Nobleman.  Mr. Nobleman’s message was about maintaining curiosity and perseverance.  One statement that was most impactful to me, and I hope our students heard: Every change in history, no matter how big or small, every change starts with one person.  He then looked at the students sitting in front of him and stated – and each of you are one person!

Virginia’s Student Assessment Summary for Families

This month, families of students who took any Standards of Learning (SOL) test between school years 2015-16 and 2023-24 will receive a Student Assessment Summary Report(link is external). The report shows a student’s state percentile ranking for each test. This allows families to see how their child ranked compared to all Virginia students who took the same test that year.

Reports are available now in SIS ParentVUE Documents. We will distribute them to students whose families do not have ParentVUE access. Learn how to access ParentVUE(link is external)

The report is intended to help families reflect on how their child performed across all tested subjects over the years. Our staff members are committed to working with families to help every student reach their highest potential. Learn more about student assessments in FCPS(link is external).

Greetings Gator Families,

It’s hard to believe we are already approaching the beginning of the third quarter of the school year! Time truly flies when our students are engaged in meaningful learning and personal growth.

We are incredibly proud of the progress our students have made so far. From mastering new skills to building stronger relationships with peers and teachers, their hard work and determination shine brightly every day.

As we look ahead to the remainder of the school year, we encourage you to stay connected with your child’s learning journey. Whether it’s reviewing progress reports, attending parent-teacher conferences, or simply discussing your child’s day, your partnership plays a vital role in their success.  Thank you for your continued support in helping us create a positive and nurturing environment for all Gators!

Attendance Matters!

Welcome to the new year!  It's important to remember the value of regular school attendance. Every day in school counts! Consistent attendance helps students:

  • Build strong academic foundations: Missing even a few days of school can disrupt learning and make it harder to keep up with their classmates.
  • Develop important social skills: School is a place where children learn to interact with others, resolve conflicts, and build friendships.
  • Foster a love of learning: Regular attendance encourages a positive attitude towards education and a lifelong love of learning.

We understand that unexpected illnesses and emergencies can occur. However, please make every effort to minimize absences and tardiness.

Greetings Gator Families,

Brrr...  the weather has been so cold!  But snow days and delayed openings aren't keeping our Gator Nation from learning and growing as we begin 2025!   Please be sure to have your child come to school with a winter coat on these cold days.

During the next few weeks, we will be wrapping up the second quarter of school and students will be engaged in mid-year assessments.  The second quarter ends on Tuesday, January 28, 2025, which is a full day of school.  A Teacher Workday is scheduled for Wednesday, January 29, 2025.

Lots of exciting events are coming up in February:  visiting author Marc Tyler Nobleman on the 10th, beginning Strings concert on the 12th, PTA Family Fitness Night on the 7th, and lots more!  Stay tuned for the weekly Gator Bytes to stay "in-the-know"!

A Message from Principal Ritter

Dear Kings Glen Families,

What a wintry start to 2025!  In Gator Nation, we have many teams which work together to make the school run smoothly.  This week, we want to give a special shout-out to our custodial team who has been working hard to clear the snow and ice around the building so that students and staff may return to school.  Additionally, our team has been cleaning the inside of our building so that it is fresh and ready for our return.  Thank you so much for your dedication to our school!

As we welcome 2025, we extend our gratitude to our amazing students, dedicated staff, and supportive families. We've already accomplished so much together, and we are looking forward to what 2025 will bring!  We are incredibly proud of the growth of our students and their desire to learn.

School Climate Survey

In cooperation with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Department of Education, is conducting the Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions. We will survey students in 6th grade as well as classroom instructors and staff, beginning in January 2025. The purpose of the student survey is to measure student support, student engagement, school discipline, and safety conditions in each school. This information will be used to guide educational practices that produce a safe and supportive school environment.

The survey does not ask for your child’s name and all answers are anonymous. No one, including teachers and administrators, will know how your child answered the survey questions. You will not have access to your child’s survey answers. You may preview the questions asked in the student survey at this website: https://tinyurl.com/VaSchoolSurveyDCJS(link is external) .

The survey will ask questions such as how students feel about their school, how students get along with one another and their teachers, how students feel about school rules, and their perceptions of their teachers’ willingness to help them. Please note that there are questions about topics that may be sensitive to some, including questions about bullying, mental health, and suicide. This is a great time to talk to your child about these important issues. For guidance and more resources on these topics, please see: https://tinyurl.com/MentalHealthdcjs(link is external) or https://tinyurl.com/VDOEstudentservices(link is external).

All students in 6th grade are eligible to participate in the survey. The survey is voluntary, and you and/or your child can decide they prefer not to participate. No action will be taken against you, your child, or the school if your child does not participate. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please notify the school office by telephone, email KGNotes@fcps.edu(link sends email) or a letter to the office by Monday, January 13th, 2025.

The Virginia School Survey results are provided each towards the end of the school year. You can find survey results individual schools and divisions here: https://tinyurl.com/VaSchoolSurvey(link is external). The results are used by the Kings Glen, Fairfax County Public Schools, and the state of Virginia to identify strengths and to address relevant needs to improve learning environments for your child as well as students across the state.

Upcoming Student Experience Survey at Kings Glen

Our school has been selected to participate in a pilot program for the FCPS Student Experience Survey(link is external). This survey will gather important feedback from students about their school experiences to help FCPS make meaningful improvements.

A limited number of classes in grades 3-6 will be selected to participate. However, all students in participating grades, except those who have opted out, will receive a link to the survey in their FCPS email. We will administer the survey in selected classes during the school day between Monday, December 9 and Tuesday, December 10.

We believe it's important to hear from our students about what we're doing well and where we can improve. This work also aligns with the five equity commitments in FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan(link is external), which focus on amplifying student voice and experiences as we work toward meeting plan goals.

Students in Grades 4-6 receive instruction in a human growth and development unit and an emotional and social health unit. For more information about the FCPS Family Life Education program, please see the detailed grade-level program descriptions at: https://www.fcps.edu/academics/elementary/family-life-education(link is external)

In addition, grade level-specific curriculum lessons are available for review.

  • Online in Schoology - includes lessons and media titles that FCPS has streaming rights for. Any additional media or book titles that are not streamed are available at your child’s school library. Parents/guardians login to Schoology using the same username and password as their Student Information System (SIS) Parent account. (Parent/Guardian Access to FLE Materials in Schoology(link is external))

Parents/guardians who do not wish to have their child participate in FLE instruction may choose to opt their child out of any or all of the lessons. If you would like to opt your child out of one or more lessons, contact KGNotes@fcps.edu(link sends email). If you have already indicated your desire to opt your child out of FLE lessons by using the link in Parent Vue, you do not need to contact anyone.

At Kings Glen, all Human Growth and Development lessons at will be taught the week before Winter Break.

Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it! Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made(link is external).

FCPS’ website(link is external) is generally the first place to find out about emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated(link is external)

Be sure to plan for the winter season. Update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE(link is external), bookmark the FCPS website, and arrange for childcare if needed.

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. Classes go outside for recess even when it is cold! See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather(link is external).

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing, please call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. Their multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and health care.

Missing School Over the Holidays

Looking ahead to the holiday season, if missing school is truly unavoidable, families are to complete a Request for a Prearranged Absence Form(link is external). The Prearranged Absence form does not mean the absence is excused.  Schoolwork “packets” cannot make up for the interaction and learning that happens in the classroom, and cannot be provided to families in advance of vacations. Visit the FCPS website for more attendance resources(link is external).
