Fourth grade students were treated to a presentation by Ms Spencer and Mr Jensen all about plants. After considering parts of a plant along with a beautiful slideshow, students were provided with a basket of fresh vegetation to classify. Ready Set Grow is an enrichment program connected with 4H and Fairfax master gardeners and supports 4th grade students county-wide.

Parents and other classes were invited in and students in Mrs Rode's class had an opportunity to share their efforts before the final approach to "Mars." "What made you think of that?" "What was your favorite part of this project." "What did you learn about astronomy and problem solving?" So many questions and plenty of answers. Observers learned that in addition to the rovers and their mission, students created slide shows to explain their work and sequence of effort. Students learned to use project boards to be organized and efficient. They designed mission badges to represent their projects.

Students in Mrs. Rode’s class have started on an adventure that transcends this planet. They have not only built Mars Rovers, but they have designed, programmed, and engineered specialized models that collect specific kinds of information during the exploration of Mars. So maybe “Mars” is in a back hallway at Kings Glen, but don’t be fooled in believing they are not collecting data of varying types using specialized digital tools atop programmed robots ...

Our class completed a very fun and successful community building and collaboration activity. Students really worked well with their groups to save Fred (out gummi worm) from drowning. They needed to put the life preserver (gummi life saver) on Fred using only paperclips. The final reflection on the board were the words and expressions that the class used to describe their group efforts to save Fred. It was pretty amazing.
