Today at our annual fourth grade Colonial Days, visitors bearing drum and fife, wearing Colonial garb, shared information about the culture of the time. Students learned about and experienced activities from stringing beads to fighting with swords. The girls practiced etiquette with fans, shooing and acknowledging would-be beaus. Everyone wrote the alphabet with quill and ink.

Sixth graders explored clay use, ceramic glazes and sculpture to create adorable bobbleheads in art class.

After a day of Thanksgiving lunches with parents and shopping at the Annual Fall Book Fair, the school community came together to honor our veterans. The celebratory assembly was filled with warm speeches and patriotic music.

Students blended knowledge of anthropology, computer programming, geology, and writing to do explorations of Native American cultures in the United States.

Students at Kings Glen spent a few weeks learning everything about planets, stars and our solar system. Then they collaborated in teams to create fun games on paper or computer to share with their classmates and people outside the classroom. Studying, learning, creating! It was all fun.

Kings Glen participated in a Socktober Drive organized by Lake Braddock's Athletic Sports Leadership Program. Donated socks will go to less fortunate community members. Kings Glen strategies lab provides opportunities for students to experiment and think. Putting ideas into action is the hallmark of the class; having fun is the reward. Mrs. Agner encourages persistence with trial and error, then reflection and growth. Every corner has a different opportunity and students work diligently to meet with success.

Kings Glen students participated in Walk to School Day. Walkers of any distance were treated to a banana (thanks to our local Giant Grocery) as a healthy snack. Many teachers joined in the walk. Lots of pictures.

“Fine.” Is that the answer you are repeatedly getting from your child when you ask, “How was school today?” Here are some open-ended questions to try when you find that your child may be open to talking.

Students in math class use games and technology along with communication and collaboration to expand understanding of fractions, decimals and percents. Groups use card games and number lines. Students play games and solve problems on the computer. Seating is an option, providing opportunity for choice that builds ownership and independence. This class gets a lesson, practice and reinforcement that meets different styles of learning and levels of learning.

Students had to use steady hands, communication and teamwork to successfully stack cups. The effort required string and patience but students proved they could handle the challenge and have fun too.
